Went to the Regal Greensboro Grande Stadium 16 (NC) to catch a matinee showing of Amelia.
It really works in my favor that I didn't to my research before I went to the movie. Confession: I am sadly lacking in my historical knowledge of great American personalities. I mean, I knew that Amelia Earhart was an amazing pioneer of the woman's role in aviation; but I didn't know that she didn't survive her last long distance flight- what would have been the first flight around the world. Had I known this, I would have appreciated the story (as I did when watching the Titanic- yes, yes, I did know the outcome of THAT one); but I wouldn't have been so on edge the last 20 minutes. And yes, I was on edge....(remember, I am the staff member at seeandtweet that wants to believe her movies are real as she is watching them)- I really wanted her to make it. But I guess, everyone would have wanted that-
Not that I am an expert in such things (and so who am I to indulge in such a confident movie review...wink), but I thought the movie was nicely done. I enjoy period movies- I like have the opportunity to see and "feel" what another time in history would have been like; and I particularly like being duped into believing it (i.e. if the movie portrays it well enough, I am a sucker). Being a hat girl myself, I was so jealous of the array available. But that's what the ladies wore back in the 20's and 30's- GREAT HATS! The costumes were lovely as well- both the men and women looked so handsome and well-dressed; everything was so tailored to show off the lines of each body.
Amelia played by Hilary Swank was absolutely lovely, and genuinely easy to like. She was described in the movie as a woman who "couldn't keep her feet on the ground." She wanted to be free- to relish in the feeling of freedom that flying gave her. A particularly interesting quote from the movie: "who wants a life imprisoned in safety." I can really relate to her need for adventure.
It was interesting to see Richard Gere play a character who was so vulnerable in his love for another person. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other role that he's played where the character was so sensitive.
The view was amazing- we got to see the arial view of so many different landscapes. And not that it was particularly beautiful land or water; but it was. And seeing that much, from that high up- it awe-inspiring...no wonder she loved being in the air. And the movie is filmed in such a way to give the audience the change to see through Amelia's eyes.
This was a movie full of great quotes- here's a few:
